Dear Spartan!
Dear Spartan, Congratulations! We are very excited that you
have chosen Norfolk State University to pursue your
postsecondary education.
According to our records your major is Undeclared.
Undeclared Student Services are provided by the Office of
First Year Experience in the ACCESS department to assist you
in selecting an appropriate major. By identifying a major
based on your academic strengths and career interests, you
will be better able to experience success in your chosen
field.
As part of Norfolk State University’s ongoing commitment
to help you reach your full potential, FYE/ACCESS provides a
variety of comprehensive academic support services designed
to facilitate and improve individual student success,
retention, and graduate rates. Services include tutoring,
mentoring, supplemental instruction, computer lab
instruction, and academic advising.
In addition you will be required to enroll in University
Life (UNI) 101. UNI 101 is a course designed to help first
year undergraduate students adjust to the university,
develop a better understanding of the college environment,
and acquire essential academic success skills. Common themes
include orientation to campus services, the NSU mission and
history, students’ rights and responsibilities and an
appreciation of service-learning civic engagement. Students
gain an overview of their learning strengths and weaknesses,
and understand their learning style to learn more
effectively and accomplish their goals. All incoming
students should read the following books during the summer
before enrolling as freshmen:
University-Wide
- Spencer Johnson, Who Moved My Cheese? for teens, G.P.
Putnam’s Sons, New York, 2002.
ACCESS (Undeclared Majors)
- Grayson, Paul A., and Meilman, Philip W., Beating
the College Blues: A Student's Guide to Coping with the
Emotional Ups and Downs of College Life
You are embarking upon an exciting journey, as you
transition from high school to college and seek your
baccalaureate degree. We will be here to assist you every
step of the way.
