January 2008
Dear Spartan!
Welcome to the School of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State
University! We are very excited that you have chosen to join
us for your postsecondary education.
The School of Liberal Arts comprises nine academic
departments in the fine and performing arts, humanities, and
social sciences. The departments are English and Foreign
Languages, Fine Arts, History, Interdisciplinary Studies,
Mass Communications and Journalism, Music, Political
Science, Psychology, and Sociology. The Army ROTC program is
located in the School of Liberal Arts as well.
Students in the School of Liberal Arts have access to a
wealth of learning experiences. The School offers students
an opportunity to understand and appreciate world cultures
as reflected in languages, the arts, and the social
sciences.
You will therefore be embarking on an extremely important
journey, transitioning from high school to college and
seeking a baccalaureate degree. One of the initiatives newly
instituted by Norfolk State University is a reading program
for incoming students. All new students will be required to
read two books before enrolling in the university. One book
will be read by everybody. The other will depend upon your
major. Here are the books you should read before arriving on
campus this August:

virtually all of them will be available in paperback and
many will be available used. You will be given further
instructions regarding the discussion of and assignments for
these readings in UNI 101, an introduction to university
life which is required for all entering students. Since each

immediately if you decide to change your major.

having you become involved in the activities of the school.
