Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State
University! We are very excited you have chosen to join us
for your postsecondary education.
The College of Liberal Arts comprises ten
academic departments in the visual and performing arts,
humanities, and social sciences. The departments are English
and Foreign Languages, Fine Arts, General Studies, History,
Interdisciplinary Studies, Mass Communications and
Journalism, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and
Sociology. The Army ROTC program is located in the College
of Liberal Arts as well.
Students in the College of Liberal Arts
participate in a broad range of high-quality learning
experiences. The courses and majors in the College offer
students an opportunity to understand and appreciate world
cultures as reflected in languages, the arts, and the social
sciences.
As a Liberal Arts student you will embark
on an extremely important journey, transitioning from high
school to college and seeking a baccalaureate degree. One of
the initiatives to help you make a successful transition to
college is a summer reading program. All entering students
are asked to read two books before enrolling in the
university. One book is a common reading for all Liberal
Arts students. The other will depend upon your major. The
