Norfolk State University Students Selected For
HBCU STEM Fellowship Awards

Norfolk, Va.—Two Norfolk State University graduates Tierra Johnson and Jarrett Blythe were competitively selected to receive the HBCU Stem Fellowship Award or the National Minority STEM Fellowship Program Award. The HBCU STEM Fellowship Program provides fellowships to graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) who have gained admission into master’s level programs in STEM areas of study at colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or the District of Columbia.

Both recipients graduated from NSU in May 2010. A native of Richmond, Va., Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. Blythe, a native of Temple Hills, Md., earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering with a minor in mathematics.

“Our graduates continue to exemplify academic excellence, tenacity and resilience,” said Dr. Kim Luckes, acting president of Norfolk State University. “These two students are no exception. Their selection for this award is a great testament to the strength and rigor of Norfolk State’s College of Science, Engineering, and Technology and to the quality of our graduates.”

The National Minority Stem Fellowship Program (NMSFP) provides fellowships to permanent residents of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Washington, D.C., who have cultural, racial, geographic, and/or socio-economic backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in graduate education.
