 NSU Hosts Veterans Day Observance

Norfolk, Va.—The Norfolk State University community will remember the sacrifices that more than 25 million veterans and current service members have made to our country. The NSU Office of Veterans Affairs will host a Veterans Day observance from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at the New Student Center, which is located on the campus of Norfolk State University.

“This Veterans Day observance is to acknowledge and thank all American veterans for their loyalty and service,” said Dr. Kim Luckes (LEW-kus), Acting President of Norfolk State University. “On this day, we continue to honor the sacrifices they have made on behalf of each one of us and our country.”

Lt. Jason Redman, a decorated U.S. Navy SEAL, will give the keynote address. Redman, a Bronze Star Medal with Valor recipient, served as Mobility Force Commander and Assault Force Commander for over 40 Direct Action missions throughout western Iraq. This Task Unit was directly credited with capturing over 124 Al Qaeda and Anti-Coalition fighters.

The program also includes special recognition of Retired Master Chief William Goines, the U.S. Navy’s first African-American Navy SEAL. During the course of his career as a Navy SEAL, Goines excelled in every aspect of special operations. Additionally, he was part of the U.S. Navy Parachute Demonstration Team, the Chuting Stars. When he retired in 1987, he achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, the highest enlisted rank in the U.S. military.

For more information, call the NSU Office of Veterans Affairs at 757-823-2586.
