Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University officials recently announced a new and historic partnership with the U.S. Navy’s Navy College Program Distance Learning Partnership (NCPDLP). NSU is the first and only historically black college/university to be accepted in this kind of partnership with the Navy. The partnership, orchestrated through NSU’s Military Program office in the School of Extended Learning, provides sailors the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Navy personnel from all over the world will now be able to earn this degree while still serving our country.

“We are pleased that Norfolk State University was chosen to be a partner in this endeavor to educate Navy personnel around the world. This partnership is an important component in Norfolk State University’s goal to reach a more diverse student population and for having an international presence,” said Dr. Kim Luckes (LEW-kus), acting president of NSU. “The interdisciplinary studies degree focuses on critical thinking skills, strong research experience, communications skills and cultural and social awareness, all of which are vital to success in every career path in today’s fast-paced and constantly changing world,” said Dr. Margaret Massey, interim dean of the School of Extended Learning. “We are very pleased that Norfolk State University has joined us in this most important initiative to help naval personnel in obtaining a bachelor’s degree,” said Captain Chuck Hollingsworth, commanding officer, Center for Personal and Professional Development at NAS Oceana, Dam Neck Annex.

The intent of the NCPDLP is to provide educational opportunities for naval personnel in order for them to obtain the baccalaureate degree. The Navy believes that obtaining a degree will help to create a global and mobile force made up of Sailors who are stationed worldwide, serving in a wide variety of circumstances that require both flexibility and variety in distance learning platforms and dynamic student services.
