Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University alumna Michelle D. Hill has been named director of alumni relations at NSU, effective today, October 14, 2010.

As the new director, Hill will provide the primary leadership for planning and the strategic vision for all aspects of the Alumni Relations department. She will responsible for developing a giving culture among alumni and working closely with the Office of Development to implement special opportunities/programs targeted to alumni giving; cultivating alumni relationships in geographical areas where more than 10 alumni reside; implementing and organizing alumni programs and affinity reunions; supervising Alumni Relations staff; serving as co-advisor to the Pre-Alumni Club; and providing leadership and support for activities that support the success of the Division of University Advancement.

“The university is pleased that Ms. Hill will serve in this vital role at Norfolk State University,” said Acting President Kim Luckes. “With more than 20,000 diverse NSU alumni in our database, it is critically important that we communicate with them on a continuous basis. Ms. Hill is charged with increasing our momentum in this effort and helping to move this university forward.”

Prior to coming to Norfolk State University, Hill served as director of alumni relations at the University of Maryland University College in Adelphi, Md. She was responsible for managing an alumni relations program with 130,000 alumni worldwide, including the UMUC Alumni Association and its membership of more than 10,000, and the annual giving program. She also provided creative writing and editorial support for traditional and Web-based communications including the alumni online community; supervised the annual giving program; and planned, implemented, and evaluated alumni events. Her accomplishments include implementing a comprehensive Alumni Association membership campaign that resulted in a 25 percent increase in membership during the 2010 fiscal year. While at UMUC, Hill also served as assistant director of alumni relations and a fundraising specialist in the Office of Institutional Advancement.

Hill is a 1996 NSU graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. She also earned a master’s degree in public administration from Howard University. She is a member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the American Society of Association Executives.
