NSU Press Release

NSU to Host 8th Annual Women’s Conference:
The Scoop on Woman

Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University will host its 8th Annual Women’s Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, located at 1881 University Drive in Virginia Beach.

This year’s conference theme, “The Scoop on Women…A Total Package,” will encourage participants to get the scoop on life through personal exploration and accomplishment, attain a healthy lifestyle, and clear up financial matters.

Actress and Executive Producer Daphne Maxwell-Reid will deliver a keynote address on “The Renaissance Woman.” Maxwell-Reid is best known for her role as Aunt Viv on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and as Hannah Griffin on the comedy series “Frank’s Place.” She is married to NSU alumnus Tim Reid, an actor, writer and producer. For more than a decade, she has served as the chief operating officer of New Millennium Studios, a state-of-the-art facility that she and her husband founded in 1997 in Petersburg, Va. She also loves to design clothes and makes most of her own wardrobe.

The conference will also feature a health panel discussion that will focus on top women’s health issues and risks and offer valuable recommendations. Panelists include Dr. Denise Harris-Proctor, a local physician at The Group for Women; Dr. Lisa Price-Stevens, medical director of the Preoperative Assessment Communication Education (PACE) Center; and Dr. Janis Sanchez-Hucles, a professor of psychology at Old Dominion University and private-practice clinical psychologist.

Other sessions include a financial boot camp presented by Chris Roebuck, co-founder and chief executive officer of the Roebuck Group, LLC. She will help participants develop a clear picture of their current financial status. Additionally, Velda Jones, manager of Albemarle Hospital’s Wellness program, will provide exercise and fitness tips.

The cost of the conference, which includes brunch, is $69. Participants may also earn free continuing education units. The preferred registration deadline is Sept. 14. For more information or to register, visit the conference website at http://www.nsu.edu/vbhec/conferences.html or call 368-4150.
