 NSU Alumnus Tim Reid to Deliver
Keynote Commencement Address May 8

Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University alumnus Tim Reid, an Emmy-nominated actor, author, director and producer, will deliver the keynote address at NSU’s commencement ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, May 8 at William “Dick” Price Stadium. The procession will begin at 9:30 a.m.

A native of Norfolk, Reid earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from NSU in 1968. He began his career as a marketing representative for DuPont. Shortly after, he entered the show business world. For three decades, Reid has been a familiar face to the entertainment industry. He is best known for his roles in prime time television programs such as Frank’s Place, Stephen King’s IT, Sister Sister, and WKRP in Cincinnati.

Reid founded Tim Reid Productions, Inc. in 1989. In 1990, he co-founded United Image Entertainment through which he produced four independent films. For his critically acclaimed feature film, “Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored,” he received producing recognition as the “Best in Show” by the Houston International Film Festival, and he also won the “Directorial Award” at the Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival. In 1999, he was awarded the “Oscar Micheaux Award” by the Producer’s Guild of America for “Outstanding Lifetime Achievement.” Reid is also the president and founder of his own film studio, New Millennium Studios, in Petersburg, Va.

Through the years, Reid has given tirelessly and generously to the community. Because of his efforts, he has been honored by numerous organizations. In 1991, he was inducted into the National Black College Hall of Fame. He was named “Virginian of the Year” by the Virginia Press Association in 1998. He is also the recipient of honorary doctors in humane letters from the following schools: NSU, 1996; Virginia State University, 1998; Medgar Evers College of CUNY, 2001; and St. Augustine College in 2003. Additionally, Reid has raised scholarship funds annually through the “Tim Reid Celebrity Weekend” of golf and tennis for the Tim Reid Scholarship Foundation.
