Naomi Earp, Chair of U.S. EEOC, to Deliver NSU Fall
Commencement Address on December 13
Norfolk, Va.—NSU
alumnus Naomi Churchill Earp, chair of the U.S. Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission, will deliver the
keynote address at Norfolk State University’s
commencement ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday,
Dec. 13 at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall. The
procession will begin at 9:30 a.m.
In August 2006,
Earp assumed her role as chair of the EEOC after serving
as vice chair of the commission since April 2003. Her
current term expires on July 1, 2010. During her tenure
at EEOC, she has worked to address 21st
century paradigms of discrimination. She spearheaded the
commission’s Youth@Work and E-RACE (Eradicating Racism
and Colorism from Employment) initiatives, oversaw the
launch of the federal Asian American and Pacific
Islander Work Group and partnered with the Social
Security Administration to create a federal Hispanic
Work Group. She has also consulted with government
representatives in Europe and Asia regarding
international equal employment opportunity issues.
Her experience in
promoting diversity and equal employment opportunity
includes a series of progressively responsible
leadership positions with federal agencies such as the
National Institutes of Health, the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation, and the U.S. Department of
Agriculture. She also worked as an independent
consultant, providing services to private employers and
public agencies on a variety of employment-related
issues and programs.
A native of Newport
News, Va., Earp received her bachelor’s degree from
Norfolk State University, a master’s degree from Indiana
University and juris doctor from Catholic University’s
Columbus School of Law. She is a member of the Supreme
Court Bar and the Pennsylvania Bar.
