NSU Partners with Norfolk Public Schools and
Calvary Revival Church to Host Parent Convocation
Judge Glenda Hatchett to Deliver Keynote Address
Norfolk, Va. —Norfolk State University will host
Parent Convocation, a forum for parents and family
members to learn ways to help their children meet or
exceed high academic performance standards. Free and
open to the public, the Parent Convocation is
co-sponsored with Norfolk Public Schools and Calvary
Revival Church. It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27
from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Joseph G. Echols Memorial
Hall.
Glenda Hatchett, better known to television audiences
across the nation as Judge Hatchett, will deliver
the keynote address. In her popular, award-winning,
nationally syndicated television series Judge
Hatchett,
she
defines a whole new approach to courtroom
television, and continues to urge viewers to become
mentors to at-risk youth in their communities. She is
the author of the national bestseller, Say What You
Mean and Mean What You Say, a book based on her
extensive professional experiences as a jurist and her
personal experiences as a mother of two boys. She also
serves as national spokesperson for CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates), a non-profit volunteer
organization that trains volunteers to represent abused
and neglected children and help them navigate the court
system. In addition to her activities at Parent
Convocation, Judge Hatchett will be signing copies of
her book, which will be on sale at the NSU Bookstore.
Geared
towards families who have children in secondary schools
and/or children planning to attend college, Parent
Convocation attendees will have the opportunity to
attend workshops on planning for college, as well as
community-based resources available to help with the
education process. Other workshops include tips on
helping your child with math, science and reading;
dealing with homework; guidance counseling and college
funding; tips on time management for college students;
applying for financial aid; and tips on keeping children
focused and motivated.
“Education, indeed, has the power to transform lives
and in transforming individual lives, Norfolk State
University transforms the human condition,” said NSU
President Carolyn W. Meyers. “This event stimulates
parents to engage with education professionals in
enabling the success of their children.”
Registration for Parent Convocation is strongly
