NSU Press Release
Nobel Laureate John L. Hall to speak
at
NSU Oct. 9
Norfolk,
Va.—
Nobel Laureate John L. Hall will present his
award-winning
achievements in physics
at 12:30 p.m.,
Thursday, October 9, at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing
Arts Center, which is located on the campus of Norfolk State
University. His lecture is titled, “The Optical Frequency
Comb: A Remarkable Tool for Metrology, Science and Medical
Diagnostics.”
Hall was a co-recipient of
the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Roy J. Glauber
and Theodor Hänsch, for his contribution to the development
of the laser-based precision spectroscopy including the
optical frequency comb technique. This research has allowed
scientists to measure and detect disease-marker molecules in
human breath for diabetes, asthma, cancer and renal failure
even for patients who appear to be healthy. Additionally,
his research has enabled engineers to improve lasers, GPS
technology and other instruments which could lead to better
long-distance communication and more precise navigation
worldwide and in space.
