NSU Nursing School Initiates Emerging Leaders Program
Norfolk,
Va.—The
Norfolk State University School of Nursing is launching
a program designed to increase the enrollment and
success of underrepresented and disadvantaged students
in the field of nursing. A $100,000 grant from the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will provide $10,000 each
to 10 nursing students who are seeking a second degree
that allows them to enter the field. Students who have
an associate degree or a baccalaureate in another field
are eligible for the program. The scholarships will be
awarded to new students during the spring 2009 semester.
The initiative, the Emerging Nurse Leaders Program, will help
significantly reduce the financial burden of students
who are seeking a second degree but are ineligible for
federal financial aid. Additionally, the students will
receive mentoring and leadership development via
participation in the National Student Nurses Association
Leadership University which includes professional
socialization, mentoring, service-learning and
networking activities.
NSU has
offered a second degree track leading to a baccalaureate
degree in nursing since 1991, graduating more than 300
nurses. For more information, contact the Office of Communications and
Marketing at (757) 823-8373.
