Governor Appoints NSU Professor to Advisory Board

Norfolk, Va.—Governor Timothy M. Kaine has appointed Norfolk State University Professor Amelia Ross-Hammond to the Virginia Council on the Status of Women. The purpose of the 19-member advisory council is to help women reach their potential and maximize their contribution to society and the Commonwealth as wage earners and citizens. Her term expires June 30, 2008. Ross-Hammond is a professor of music and the coordinator of the service learning and civic engagement program at Norfolk State. She holds a doctoral degree in education leadership and curriculum instruction, with a minor in multicultural arts from the University of Denver.

Ross-Hammond is a graduate of Norfolk State’s inaugural Presidential Administrative Leadership Development Institute and the African Association for Blacks in Higher Education, Leadership and Mentoring Institute IV.

She earned a certificate of completion in the field of service learning and community outreach from the Community Works Institute in Vermont. She was trained as part of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities as the campus coordinator for the Young Voter Strategies Registration Drive. Ross-Hammond serves as chair of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Minority Council and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Southside Boys and Girls Club.

Ross-Hammond has presented at several workshops and national conferences including the Technical Assistance workshops on service-learning hosted by Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the United Negro College Fund, the American Association of Colleges and Universities, the American Democracy Project National Conference and the National Outreach and Scholarship conference. Under her leadership, the program has expanded and gained the support of local community civic organizations.
