NSU Fall Convocation
to be Held Sept. 6
Norfolk, Va.—Shontre
Outlaw, an NSU senior with a double major in elementary
education and psychology, will deliver the keynote
address at NSU’s Fall Convocation at 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 6 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing
Arts Center. Free and open to the public, convocation
is designed to formally welcome and induct new students
into the university family.
A native of Norfolk,
Outlaw is the third child of Diane Outlaw. He is a
product of the Norfolk Public Schools system and a proud
graduate of the Class of 2003 at Booker T. Washington
High School.
While attending NSU,
Outlaw has been recognized as a Dean’s List and honor
student each semester. He was selected as a 2007
Teacher of Promise recipient by the Virginia
Department of Education, which is given to the most
promising teachers throughout the Commonwealth of
Virginia. He is currently serving in his second term as
the president of the NSU Student Virginia Education
Association. He helped to plan a Future Educators
Association chapter at P.B. Young, Sr. Elementary School
in Norfolk. He also assisted in creating a partnership
between NSU/SVEA and Richard Bowling Elementary in which
NSU teacher education candidates tutor and mentor
elementary students. Additionally, he was inducted into
the 2007 NSU/SVEA Hall of Fame for his work in the
public school system.
Other activities
include serving as an assistant football coach for the
junior varsity team at Booker T. Washington and an
officer of elections for the City of Norfolk; and
participating in the NSU NAACP.
A member of Mount
Lebanon Baptist Church in Norfolk, Outlaw believes
“educating and uplifting the community in which he lives
needs the proactive participation of all stakeholders.”
His goal is to help students realize that education can
and will break down any barriers they may encounter.
