NSU President Names Executive Assistant
Norfolk, Va.— Adib Akmal Shakir has been named executive assistant to Norfolk State University President Carolyn W. Meyers, Ph.D., effective July 1. Dr. Shakir is currently an assistant professor of psychology at NSU. As executive assistant to Meyers, Dr. Shakir will assist President Meyers in implementing new initiatives and in refocusing the university’s vision.
Dr. Shakir’s 30-year-career includes leading Education Consultants LLC as its owner and president. In addition, he held positions as senior consultant for Mattox Woolfolk LLC, a government relations firm; senior vice president for management consulting with Cassidy & Associates Inc.; President of Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss.; and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Bethune-Cookman College.
A resident of Hampton, Va., Dr. Shakir earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morehouse College, a master’s degree in community/clinical psychology from Norfolk State University (1980) and a Ph.D. in counseling and human systems from Florida State University. Practica and internships have included research at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. During his tenure as president of Tougaloo College, the institution’s enrollment rose to an all-time high and its endowment increased substantially.
His awards and recognition include graduating Cum Laude from Morehouse College and serving as a member of the U.S. President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities from 1992-2000. Dr. Shakir is a member of The Association of Black Psychologists, 100 Black Men, and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity.
