NSU Scholars go to Honda’s Academic National
Championship Tournament
Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University has won a
berth to the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National
Championship Tournament. The event, scheduled for April
12-16 in Orlando, is in its 18th year. The championship
tournament is open to all of the nation’s four-year,
degree-granting Historically Black Colleges and
Universities. Each year, 64 schools qualify to attend
the national championship tournament. Participating
HBCUs receive grants which enhance student programs.
The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge National
Championship Tournament is similar to college
basketball’s national tournament, which leads to the
Final Four and the national championship. This academic
tournament requires participants to have broad-based
knowledge in many areas including history, geography,
religious studies, literature, fine art, performing
arts, current events, science, and sports.
Norfolk State was the national champion in 1992 and a
semi-finalist in 1995, 1999 and 2000. Norfolk State has
participated since 1989 and has earned $155,500 in
grants. This year’s team members are Clifford Denizé,
Sarah Donofry, Katrina Field, Breanna Henderson and
Jonny Rice.
