NSU Athletes to
Network with Virginia Beach City Officials
Norfolk, Va.—
The Norfolk State University Athletics Department and
Athletics Foundation in conjunction with the City of
Virginia Beach will host a networking social for NSU
student-athletes at 6 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Joseph
G. Echols Memorial Hall which is located on the campus
of Norfolk State. More than
250 student-athletes
are expected to participate.
The event entitled,
“Preparing for the Future … What’s Next,” will feature
Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf, NSU Athletics
Director Marty Miller, members of the NSU Athletics
Foundation Board of Directors, and various
representatives from the City of Virginia Beach —
Police, Fire, Economic Development and Human Resources
agencies. The goals of the networking social are to
build a partnership between NSU student-athletes and the
City of Virginia Beach, and create an awareness of the
diverse job opportunities that are available in Virginia
Beach. “The skills student-athletes use in preparing for
athletic competition on the court or the playing field
are the same skills they will use in the workforce,”
says Miller.
The networking event
is part of the National Collegiate Athletic
Association’s (NCAA) CHAMPS/Life Skills program, which
helps to enhance the quality of the student-athlete
experience within the University setting. The
partnership between NSU and City of Virginia Beach
evolved during the 2006 football season. According to
Gregory B. Cade, Virginia Beach Fire Chief, “NSU
student-athletes have the team-oriented work ethics and
self-discipline we look for in our potential public
safety employees.”
Often times,
students feel they have to leave the area to find career
opportunities. “We want NSU student-athletes to know,”
says Carlos Moulds, Virginia Beach human resources
analyst, “that the City of Virginia Beach is a Community
for A Lifetime.”
