Norfolk State University Hosts
Conference to Raise
Sexual Assault Awareness
Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University will present a
free conference on sexual violence Saturday, March 17
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Scott-Dozier Dining Hall,
second floor, which is located on the NSU campus. The
focus of the conference, titled Sexual Assault: It’s
Everybody’s Business, is to increase awareness about
sexual assault.
According to the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice
Services, African-American women are experiencing sexual
assault at an alarming rate, and often are victimized at
a very young age. Conference topics include: A Call to
Black Men: Ending Violence Against Women in our
Communities; Speak into the Fire: An Artistic
Performance Illustrating the Struggles of Women
Experiencing Domestic and Sexual Violence; The Role of
Churches and Faith-Based Organizations in Reducing
Sexual Violence; Violence, Hip Hop and the Black
Feminist Imagination; Clothesline and the Wall of Tears
exhibits.
The conference will include break-out sessions, Anthony
Porter, an educator and social justice activist; Nandi
Crosby, associate professor of sociology and women’s
studies at California State University-Chico; and an
open forum facilitated by Calden Moyé, host of the talk
show, “You Should Have Been in Church,” on Rejoice,
100.9 FM.
