NSU Kicks-off Black History Month Activities with its
Annual Martin Luther King Commemorative Freedom March
Norfolk, Va. — Norfolk State University will
begin its 2007 Black History Month celebration with the
annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Freedom
March at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11. The symbolic march
leaves from the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library and
proceeds to the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts
Center. Following the march, Dr. Albert Paul Brinson,
the retired interim associate general secretary for
World Mission Support of American Baptist Churches USA,
will deliver the keynote address. Brinson was a leader
in the civil rights movement and a colleague of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis and others. He was
also active in the student movement that involved
sit-ins and acts of civil disobedience which eventually
led to the end of segregation in the South.
Brinson, a Morehouse graduate, was licensed and ordained
at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta by
co-pastors Martin Luther King, Sr. and Martin Luther
King, Jr. His many honors and awards include tributes
from the City of Atlanta, Ga. and Clark Atlanta

growth and vitality of the city and for serving as one
of the organizing students of the Atlanta Student
