NSU to Host Conference on
Strengthening the Family by Supporting Our Sons' Journey
to Manhood
Norfolk, Va. - The Norfolk State University Child Welfare
Student Educational Stipend Program will host the Eastern
Area I Professional Kinship Care Training Conference on
Strengthening the Family by Supporting Our Sons' Journey to
Manhood from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 4 at the
Scott-Dozier Dining Hall, which is located on the NSU
campus.
Geared towards staff in public and private welfare agencies,
the training objective of the conference is help facilitate
the delivery of more comprehensive and culturally sensitive
services to stabilize and support grandparents and other
relatives who care for minor male kin.
International lecturer and author Nancy Boyd-Franklin, a
psychologist and professor at Rutgers University's Graduate
School of Applied and Professional Psychology, will be the
featured conference presenter. An expert in the field of
social welfare policy and practice, and the author of Boys
into Men, Boyd-Franklin will examine some of the challenges
faced by kinship caregivers when supporting the African
American and Latino males' journey to manhood.
Throughout her career, she has been involved in the
development of community-based interventions for African
Americans and other ethnic minority clients and families.
She currently trains doctoral students to provide individual
therapy, home-based family therapy, and school-based
violence prevention groups for at-risk adolescents.
Co-sponsored by KinCare Connection - Hampton Roads Regional
Taskforce on Kinship Care, VISSTA, and the Virginia
Department of Social Services, the cost of the conference,
which includes breakfast and lunch, is $35 per person.
