NSU Virginia
Beach Higher Education Center and Virginia Beach City Public
Schools
Launch Spartan Prep Academy
Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk
State University’s Virginia Beach Higher Education Center
has partnered with Virginia Beach City Public Schools to
launch the Spartan Prep Academy, a new initiative designed
to promote pre-collegiate awareness by encouraging,
educating, and empowering minority students. The program
will kick off August 8-12 at the Virginia Beach Higher
Education Center, located at 1881 University Drive.
According to Dana Singleton, one of the Academy’s two
coordinators, the program is seen as “a growth tool to
foster a stronger relationship with Virginia Beach City
Public Schools. By capturing students as they enter high
school, and working with them until they finish, this will
help them stay on the right track during their college years
as well as become productive members of our society. “
More than 40 students will be participating in the 2005
Academy. Virginia Beach City Public Schools will provide
transportation, books and supplies, and teacher resources
for the academy. NSU faculty and staff will coordinate
motivational speakers, campus tours, workshops on team
building and goal setting, college survival skills and a
host of over activities.
The Academy, whose mission is to provide fundamental support
and preparation for higher education pursuits to first
generation Norfolk State University bound students, will
also introduce participants to careers and educational
opportunities, college life, continuing education
opportunities, and Norfolk State University.
