NSU Press Release
NSU School of Education to Host Community Teachers
Institute
July 10-15
 Norfolk,
Va.—The Community Teachers Institute has selected
Norfolk State University to host their Summer Institute
for Urban Educators July 10-15. The Institute, which
will bring educators and Institute faculty from across
the nation, will be held in the newly renovated Bozeman
Education Bldg.
“We looked at a school that could use and value the
Institute,” said Rushern L. Baker III, executive
director of the Community Teachers Institute. “NSU has a
large School of Education who had administrators
friendly to the proposal and we felt that they were
committed to advancing education for a diverse national
and local community over the long haul.”
Geared toward educators who want to be culturally
connected to urban children and families, this weeklong
series of intensive seminars taught by seasoned and
recognized urban educators will focus on leadership in
the context of the classroom and the school and the
community. Strategies for effective classroom
management, instruction and school/community integration
in urban schools will also be covered. NSU faculty,
staff and students will be actively involved in the
management and evaluation of the Institute.
Founded in1989 as a community-based organization, the
Community Teachers Institute supports the creation of
partnerships among schools, institutions of higher
education, and community based organizations to
“home-grow” teachers rooted in communities of color.
These partnerships recruit, develop, and nurture
culturally-connected teachers committed to the
empowerment of students and the transformation of public
education to foster social and economic justice. CTI
also provides professional development and technical
assistance to emerging and established educators.
