NSU Receives Grant for Gang/Drug
Prevention Program Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk
State University’s Police Department has been awarded a
$141,000 grant to develop a gang/drug prevention program for
neighborhoods surrounding the university. The University was
one of 32 state and local entities to receive a share of
Governor Mark R. Warner’s $3 million allocation to combat
gang activity throughout Virginia.
The goals and objectives of NSU’s program are as follows:

To work in collaboration with other
historically black colleges and universities to create a
model “gang prevention/intervention” program for at-risk
communities in which black universities are located.

To identify youth who are at risk for
gang activity in targeted areas around the University,
and their level/type of gang activity

To educate and empower specific
elementary, middle, and high schools through programs in
education, personal/civic accountability, academics,
recreation, mentoring, conflict resolution, and
anti-bullying programs, and
-
To provide appropriate and relevant
teacher/parent/community training about recognizing the
signs of gang involvement and intervention, and more.
