NSU Martin Luther King, Jr.
Commemorative Observance and March to be Held Jan. 13
Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University will hold a Martin
Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Observance Thursday, January
13.
The observance, which officially kicks off the University’s
African-American History Month celebration, will begin with
a symbolic march at 6 p.m. at the Lyman Beecher Brooks
Library. At 6:30 p.m., the campus community will gather at
G.W.C. Brown Memorial Hall, Little Theater for the annual
Martin Luther King, Jr. program.
Joseph E. Harris, distinguished professor of history at
Howard University, will deliver the keynote address. Harris
specializes in African and African Diaspora History. He is
the author of several academic books on African history
including The African Diaspora in World History and
Politics, Global Dimensions of the African Diaspora, The
African Presence in Asia, Africans as Seen by Classical
Writers, Africans and Their History, and African-American
Reactions to War in Ethiopia, 1936-1941.
In addition to the annual Martin Luther King Observance, the
University will also be hosting a variety of
African-American History Month Activities focusing on the
theme of the African Diaspora. The African Diaspora refers
to the demographic, historical and cultural legacies created
by the migrations of African people to other continents of
the world.
