NSU Professor Awarded Fulbright ScholarshipNorfolk, Va.—Emeka Okoli, a professor of mass communications and journalism at Norfolk State University, has received the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship. As a Fulbright participant, he will join the ranks of more than 261,000 alumni of the program. The Fulbright program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Fulbright grants are awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching. The purpose of the Fulbright grant is to use selected individuals to establish open communication and long-term cooperative relationships with their host countries. Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, and demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields. Okoli is one of 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries. In January 2005, Okoli, along with his wife and two children, will reside in Nigeria for the 2005-2006 academic years. He will design and teach the first intercultural/interethnic communication program at the University of Abuja, which is located in Nigeria. This is especially important because of the many social and ethnic issues in and around Nigeria. For more information, contact the Office of News and Media Relations at 757-823-8373.. |
