NSU President Marie V. McDemmond Approved for Sabbatical
Norfolk, Va.—At its Dec. 12 meeting, the Norfolk State University Board of
Visitors approved a six-month sabbatical for NSU President Marie V.
McDemmond. The sabbatical will allow McDemmond to accept a visiting
professorship at Florida International University in Miami, Fla. Alvin J.
Schexnider, NSU's executive vice president, will serve as acting president
during this period.
During the sabbatical, McDemmond will teach a graduate course in higher
education finance and research financial issues affecting the increasing
cost of higher education. The sabbatical will begin June 16, 2004 as
McDemmond completes her seventh year as NSU's president. It will extend to
Dec. 10, 2004, when McDemmond will return to her duties as president.
Jack L. Ezzell, Jr., rector of the NSU Board of Visitors, stated that the
president’s sabbatical, which was one of the terms in McDemmond's contract
renewal more than a year ago, "was well deserved and will enable McDemmond
to use her financial expertise through her teaching and research to
benefit higher education".
