Norfolk State University to Host Multicultural Reception
Featuring Author David Lamb Feb. 8

Norfolk, Va.-Norfolk State University's Office of Admission will host a multicultural reception, which will celebrate diversity, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center.

The reception, which is free and open to the public, will feature author David Lamb. His talk Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens? is based on his first novel, which is the same title of the lecture. His discussion, followed by a question and answer period, and book signing, will focus on the relationship between the African-American and Latino cultures.

A native of Queens, N.Y., Lamb began writing fiction while attending law school because he became disenchanted with many of the articles he read in connection with the hip-hop and African-American culture. His novel Do Platanos Go Wit' Collard Greens? has been widely hailed as a breakthrough novel because it helped create the genre that Lamb describes as hip hop fiction. His second novel, The Trumpet is Blown, is also the first novel to look at Islam in the African-American community.

Lamb also teaches a course on hip hop and society at John Jay College of the City University of New York where he further explores the wide range of themes including the sociological implications of "thug life," the relationship between faith and hip hop to gender conflict and the image of women in hip hop culture.

A graduate of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and New York School of Law, Lamb is currently working on his next book, a collection of essays entitled Iceberg Slim, Malcolm X and Hip Hop: Hustlers, Heroes and Hollywood.

In addition to Lamb's talk, representatives from NSU academic departments, administrative offices and student organizations will be available to provide information and answer questions about the university.
