| Norfolk, Va.-Frank Foster, former orchestra leader for
the Count Basie Orchestra, will participate in a week long artist-in-residency
at Norfolk State University in April. His stay will culminate in
a concert with the NSU Jazz Ensemble on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30
p.m. in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center.
The artist-in-residency program offers NSU students the opportunity
to learn and perform with professionals in a variety of areas.
Foster will conduct workshop classes with students and with the
community. The NSU Jazz Ensemble concert will include original
arrangements composed by Foster.
Frank Foster is a two-time Grammy Award winner celebrating more
than 55 years in music. He has been working on freelance projects
since leaving the Count Basie Orchestra in 1995. He has recently
completed an all-star quartet CD recording for the Arabesque Jazz
label, and performed with his quartet, The Non-Electric Company
at the Newport Jazz Festival at Sea. Foster is a saxophonist,
composer, arranger and bandleader whose talent highlights a range
of experiences that have made him one of the more renowned and
prolific musicians in the world.
In
January of this year, Foster received the American Jazz
Masters Fellowship award from The National Endowment for
the Arts. He was one of three recipients of the fellowship.
He will also release another CD featuring his big band
called The Loud Minority later in the year.
