| Norfolk,
Va.- Susheel Bibbs, a researcher, enactor, and producer,
will present Mary Ellen Pleasant: The Mother of Civil Rights
in California, a dramatic interpretation, at 3 p.m. Monday,
March 25 at Brown Memorial Hall Little Theatre. The presentation
is free and open to the public.
Bibbs,
the foremost expert on Pleasant, holds advanced degrees
in philosophy and music and has been a scholar/enactor
and grant recipient of the California Council for the
Humanities since 1994. Her book on Pleasant's activism,
Heritage of Power, will soon be followed by a television
documentary called Meet Mary Pleasant. Bibbs' musical
and dramatic work on Pleasant have been certified by the
California Council for the Humanities and consists of
letters, memoirs, and interviews on Pleasant and her mentor,
Marie LaVeaux.
Bibbs
is currently a lecturer at the University of California
at Berkeley and director of programs and an exhibit on
Pleasant for the National Park Services Network to Freedom
Program.
