Norfolk State University President Inducted As
Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Virginia

Norfolk, Va.- An investiture ceremony for Norfolk State University President Marie V. McDemmond's appointment as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for the state of Virginia will take place on Wednesday, April 10 at the Scott-Dozier Dining Hall on NSU's campus. The ceremony will begin at noon. McDemmond was appointed as the Civilian Aide for Virginia last October by Thomas E. White, Secretary of the Army.

Civilian Aides to the Secretary of the Army are business and community leaders selected by the Secretary to advise and support Army leaders across the country. Civilian Aides come from many professions including business, education, finance, industry, law, medicine, news media and public service. Civilian Aides support the Army through personal contact and correspondence with their colleagues, through public statements and appearances, and through participation in Army-sponsored events. Civilian Aides are appointed for two-year terms and receive no pay or other military benefits. About 75 individuals serve as an Aide for a specific state, or as an Area Aide for one of the multi-state Continental U.S. Armies, or as Civilian Aide At-Large.

As a Civilian Aide, McDemmond will serve as an advisor to the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff of the Army, and senior Army commanders whose areas of responsibility involve Virginia. University officials are expecting key leaders from the Secretary of the Army's office and military to participate in this event.
