Norfolk State to Host 42nd Annual
Concert of the Intercollegiate Association Feb. 17
Norfolk, Va.-Norfolk State University and Shaw University Music Departments will host the 42nd Annual Intercollegiate Music Association Conference February 15-17 at L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. Free and open to the public, the conference will feature a student recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 and a grand concert at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17. This year's distinguished guest conductor/clinician is Jessie Suggs. In keeping with the theme of African-American History Month, approximately 275 students from 12 colleges and universities will gather to perform musical selections composed by African-American composers. The concert will feature four performing ensembles, which include the choir conducted by Frank Williams; the symphonic band, conducted by Ivory Brock; the strings conducted by Jessie Suggs; and the jazz ensemble conducted by Robert Ransom. The Intercollegiate Music Association (IMA) is the result of an idea advanced by Nathaniel Gatlin, former head of the music department at Virginia State University. Since its inception, the IMA has experienced significant growth in intercollegiate cooperation through the exchange of faculty and student artists and the sharing of institutional resources. In addition, the association also provides annual conferences, workshops, recitals, lectures and more. For more information, call the Office of News and Media Relations at 823-8373 or the NSU Department of Music at 823-8544. |
