Center for Strategic and Global Studies Brings Marine Corps Sgt. Major to NSU Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University, the Center for Strategic and Global Studies, the Hampton Naval ROTC Spartan Company and the University’s Honors Program are sponsoring a lecture by Sgt. Major Alford McMichael, U.S. Marine Corps at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center on the NSU campus. McMichael is the highest -ranking non-commissioned officer in the USMC and the first African American to hold the position. The topic of his lecture will be National Security: War in the 21st Century. Sgt. Major McMichael has had a long and illustrious military career. He enlisted in the Corps in August of 1970 and assumed his current duties as the 14th Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps in July 1999. He has been decorated numerous times including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star.
