NORFOLK STATE CROSS COUNTRY WINS UMES INVITATIONAL Norfolk, Va.— The Norfolk State University men's cross country team opened the 2002 season by winning the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) Invitational held in Princess Anne, Maryland this weekend. The NSU women's cross country team finished fourth in the women's meet. Norfolk State senior Kirwayne Holford won the men's meet with a time of 27.20. The Spartans showed their team strength with six runners finishing in the top-10. "This was a great way to start off the season," said NSU head coach Kenneth Giles. "This will definitely help to prepare us as we face tougher competition next week at the University of Virginia Invitational." Senior Joseph Terer finished in third place with a time of 27 minutes and 32 seconds. Freshmen Patrick Scott and Daniel Helfrick finished fourth and fifth with times of 27.41 and 27.47 respectively. Junior William Keown and freshmen Geofrey Chelule rounded out the top-10 for NSU with times of (28.05) and (28.27) to secure the seventh and ninth positions. Freshmen Denisha Hudson was the top finisher for the NSU women with a time of 20 minutes and 24 seconds for third place. Senior Renata White was the only other NSU runner to finish in the top-20 with a time of (21.38) for 12th place. Both teams will travel to Charlottesville, VA to compete in the University of Virginia Invitational next Saturday.
