July 16, 2002 U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education to Speak at NSU July 23 Norfolk, Va. Sponsored by the Washington Baltimore Hampton Roads-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (WBHR-LSAMP), Bryant's address will highlight the symposium, which is designed to provide unique opportunities for students from WBHR-LSAMP partner schools (Bowie State, University of the District of Columbia, Hampton University, Norfolk State, Howard University and Virginia State) to present their outstanding work, network with faculty and students and enjoy an exciting educational experience. As deputy assistant secretary, Bryant is responsible for assisting with the general direction and supervision of all matters relating to postsecondary programs and services. Prior to joining the Department of Education, Bryant served as Virginia's Secretary of Education during the administration of James S. Gilmore III. In this capacity, Bryant provided advice on the needs of 37 educational and cultural agencies, and managed the policy development and budget materials for K-12 public schools, vocational and technical training centers, 15 colleges and universities, the state community college system, five public museums, the Library of Virginia, and two teaching hospitals. A native of Goulds, Fla., Bryant received a bachelor of science degree from Florida A & M University and a master of education from Howard University.
