First HBCU Foreign Policy International Think Tank

Norfolk, Va.-Norfolk State University will kick-off the establishment of the first foreign policy international think tank at a historically black college or university with a symposium on "Issues in National Security and Terrorism" at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the ballroom of Scott Dozier Dining Hall.

"The think tank will serve as a hub for academic discourse on issues related to foreign policy, international relations, and international law and politics," said Carol Pretlow, assistant professor of political science and project director of the community of global scholars research team and think tank. "It will also establish a foundation for student development and interest in political science and research." Free and open to the public, the symposium will include a panel discussion with the following featured speakers:

· Brinston Collins, emeriti professor of history at Norfolk State, will discuss the role of Middle East history and politics, and how the September 11 terrorist attack will affect our relationship and politics in the Middle East.

· Jesse Pendleton, NSU professor of history and geography, will discuss the impact and effect of geography on issues of national security.

· Ray Taylor, president of the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads, will discuss world politics and globalization.

· A NATO representative will discuss NATO's perspectives on engagement in Afghanistan and combating terrorism.

· A representative from the Armed Forces Staff College will discuss military realities and strategies.

Rudolph Wilson, chair of the political science department, and Emeka Okoli, associate professor of mass communications and journalism, will moderate the symposium. For more information, call the Office of News and Media Relations at 757-823-8373.
