NSU to Host the Region III National
Association of Black Journalists Conference April 6-7
Norfolk, Va.-Norfolk State
University's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and the
Region III National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) will host
the NABJ Region III Conference April 6-7 at L. Douglas Wilder Performing
Arts Center. The opening conference will begin at 8 a.m., Saturday,
April 7.
Geared towards journalists and students pursuing careers in mass communication
and journalism, the conference will focus on Environmental Racism: How
to Recognize and Report the Hazards Facing Minority Communities; Beyond
the Basics; and The Ins and Outs of Writing a Book: How to Publish,
Market and Sell Your Work.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend a variety of panel
discussions. Panel discussion topics include the following: Environmental
Racism 101; When the Five W's and H Succeed; Show Me What You're Working
With: Community Activists Put and Environmental Reporters and Editors
in the Interview Hot Seat; Making Public Relations Professionals Your
Friends; Moving to Dot-com; Big Ideas For Every Market; Beyond Writer's
Block: Journalists-turned-best-selling authors; There's Nothing Secret
About Having a Good Agent; and Books, Films and Videotapes: Is there
no limit?
Conference coordinators and speakers include Blair Walker, co-author
of Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun; Cathy Jackson, professor
of mass communications at Norfolk State University; Sharyn Flanagan,
a copy writer from USA Today; Wayne Dawkins, columnist at The Daily
Press; Rudy Wilson, chair of Norfolk State's political science department;
Scott Harper from the Virginian Pilot; Helen Person, a Portsmouth community
activist; and more.
In addition to the panel, discussions and conference speakers, a resume/writing
critiquing session, a reception, and a host of other activities will
be held. The cost of the conference is $65 for non-NABJ members, $25
for students and free for community activists involved in environmental
activities.
