Norfolk, Va.— As the highlight of the 41st Annual Intercollegiate Music Association Conference, Norfolk State University will host a concert from 2:30-4:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17 at L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. In keeping with the theme of African-American History Month, approximately 275 students from 12 colleges and universities will gather to perform musical selections composed by African-American composers. The concert will feature four performing ensembles, which include the choir conducted by Ronald Carter; the symphonic band, conducted by Harold Jeffreys; the strings conducted by Tim Holley; and the jazz ensemble conducted by David Legette. Norfolk State University’s Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority will also play additional musical selections. The Intercollegiate Music Association (IMA) is the result of an idea advanced by Nathaniel Gatlin, former head of the music department at Virginia State University. Since its inception, the IMA has experienced significant growth in intercollegiate cooperation through the exchange of faculty and student artists and the sharing of institutional resources. In addition, the association also provides annual conferences, workshops, recitals, lectures and more. For more information, call the Office of News and Media Relations at 823-8373. |
