Norfolk State University to Receive Excel Award of Excellence

Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University will be honored for its 65th years of excellence in education at this year’s Hampton Roads Black Media Professional’s (HRBMP) 2001 Excel Awards program at 6 p.m. Feb. 17, at the Harrison Opera House.

Founded in 1935, with fewer than 100 students, Norfolk State had its beginnings in three rented classrooms in a Norfolk YMCA.  Today, Norfolk State is one of the nation’s largest historically black institutions of higher learning. The university offers 37 undergraduate degree programs, 14 masters, and two doctoral degrees.

HRBMP is a non-profit network of communicators serving as a liaison between the Hampton Roads African-American community and the media and is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. It was founded in 1982 as Tidewater Media Professionals.

Tickets for the Excel Awards program are $40 in advance and $45 at the door.  Tickets for students with valid ID are $20 at the door.  For more information, call Sonja M. Watts at 460-0396.
