NSU to Host HBCU Safety Awareness Day Sept. 29

Norfolk, Va. Norfolk State University has received a grant from the United States Department of Transportation to conduct “Historically Black College and University Safety Awareness Day” from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29.  The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held on the campus greens, which is located behind the Mills E. Godwin Student Union.

Sponsored by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Transportation Safety Services, the goal of this project is to improve highway safety through awareness, education and experiential opportunities for students and the Norfolk community. Drunk driving simulation demonstrations, peer counseling and seat beat inspections will be available to participants.

Representatives from the Norfolk and Norfolk State University Police Departments, DMV Mobile Unit, Red Cross Bloodmobile, Alcohol Beverage Control and various civic leagues will be available to address safety and wellness issues.  McGruff, the crime dog, and the Spartan Mascot will also be on the scene.
