"Diversity
in the Classroom: Promoting Educational Empowerment for All" to be Held

Norfolk, Va.- Norfolk State University will sponsor the Eighth Annual Dewitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Pathways to Teaching Project and Teacher Recruitment Project from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5 in Little Theatre of Brown Memorial Hall. This year's conference theme "Diversity in the Classroom: Promoting Educational Empowerment for All" will offer teachers, administrators and community representatives successful strategies for working with urban and diverse students. The opening session speaker will be Jeffrey Howard, founder and president of the Efficacy Institute in Waltham, Mass. He is nationally renowned for his work in training teachers and school administrators to work with urban students. The luncheon speaker is Brenda Andrews, publisher and editor-in-chief of the New Journal and Guide newspaper. She will provide a different perspective on working with diverse students. In addition to the keynote speakers' presentations, the conference will also offer stimulating and informative workshops, which will address diversity issues and concerns, and provide successful strategies for working with diverse students The cost for the conference, which includes conference materials, a continental breakfast and luncheon, is $50 for pre-registered guest. The deadline for pre-registration is Sept. 30. On-site registration will be available and at a fee of $60. Reduced fees are available for retirees and students.
