Norfolk State
Wins CASE Media Fellowship Program
Norfolk, Va.- Norfolk State University's media fellowship proposal "Welfare Reform: Lessons Learned; Lessons to be Learned" has been accepted for the 2001-2002 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Media Fellowship program. The University was one of only 24 proposals accepted nationwide out of a pool of hundreds of colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, and South Africa. A group of senior media representatives from top news organizations including CNN, the New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Washington Post select the fellowships to be offered. Judges choose fellowships that will be of greatest interest to journalists based on subject matter, programming, and participation by experienced faculty. In March 2002, Norfolk State will host up to 15 journalists from across the country on campus. The journalists will be involved in an intense program with University faculty to discuss welfare reform. Workshop topics will include the differences between family and self-suffiency and "just getting a job;" how are states addressing the hard-to serve populations; the impact of welfare reform on childcare, transportation, Medicaid, and food stamp costs; how are the children doing; and more. CASE, the largest international association of education associations, helps its members build stronger relationships with their alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education. CASE also offers a variety of advancement products and services, provides standards and an ethical framework for the profession, and works with other organizations to respond to public issues of concern, while promoting the importance of education worldwide.
