24th Annual Leadership in Education Conference to be Held May 5 Norfolk, Va.- Norfolk State University's Department
of Special Education and the Special Education Alumni will hold the
24th Annual Leadership in Education Conference at 7:30 a.m. Saturday,
May 5, in the Bozeman Education Building.
This year's conference, Building Better Tomorrows: Negotiating the Education Maze, is open to all educators, school administrators, counselors, school nurses, parents, paraprofessionals and community agency personnel. The goal of the conference is to provide a forum for scholarly presentations and lively discussions of contemporary issues related to the prevention and intervention strategies for persons with exceptionalities due to genetic, biomedical and environmental causes. Alfreda O. Charity, an NSU alumnus and teacher at Blair Middle School in Norfolk, will deliver the keynote address. Recognized as Norfolk's Teacher of the Year in 1982 and 1986, Charity has served in the professional capacity of helping teacher in the Norfolk Public School system for two years. As a helping teacher, she was called upon to render professional leadership, guidance and expertise to any teacher experiencing difficulties with their classroom assignments. In addition to the keynote address, the daylong conference will feature concurrent sessions on school safety/drug awareness, paraprofessionals and their roles in society, writing discipline plans, integrating children with special needs, strategies for identification and programming at-risk culturally diverse gifted learners, transitioning from school to the real world and more. The cost for the conference is $30 and $20 for undergraduate students. On-site registration will be available at a cost of $35, but pre-registration by April 21 is preferred. For more information, call Andrea Callahan at 823-8189 or contact the special education office at 823-8714. -MDG- |
