Norfolk State University Names Sharon Riddick Hoggard
Director of News and Media Relations

Norfolk, Va.—Sharon Riddick Hoggard has been named director of news and media relations at Norfolk State University, effective Oct. 24.

As the new director, Hoggard will serve as the primary liaison and spokesperson to the media and provide general information about the university’s students, faculty, staff and programs.  She will also coordinate the preparation and dissemination of news releases and other materials, seek media opportunities to advance the university and apprise the president about media opportunities and concerns that impact the campus community.

Prior to coming to Norfolk State, Hoggard served as the public information coordinator for the City of Chesapeake’s Public Communications Department for nearly six years.  Her responsibilities included handling media relations, promoting special events, researching and writing news releases and articles, public relations counseling, emergency operations communications and creating public information campaigns on city issues and services. 

A native of Portsmouth, Va., Hoggard has established a 13-year track record in public relations, building strategic alliances with print and electronic media, increasing community support and handling emergency and project management plans.

Hoggard received a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis in journalism from Old Dominion University.  Her continuing education background includes graduate studies in public administration at Troy State University, training in desktop publishing design and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management courses in crisis communication.  She is also a member of the American Society of Public Administrators, the Conference of Minority Public Administrators and the Public Relations Society of America.

Other accomplishments include the 1995 Outstanding Hampton Roads Water Efficiency Team Service Award, 1998 Conference of Minority Public Administrators Outstanding Service Award, and the 1999 Christian Home Baptist Church Outstanding Service Award.

Hoggard resides in the West Norfolk section of Churchland with her husband Leroy and son, Kendall.
