Norfolk State University Signs Partnership
Agreement with International Science Education Program

Norfolk, Va.—During National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, Norfolk State University and Howard University became partners in the Global Learning and Operations to Benefit the Environment program.

On Sept. 21, Norfolk State’s Dean of the School of Education, Jean Braxton, and S. Raj Chaudhury, associate professor of physics, and James Johnson, dean of Howard University’s College of Engineering signed the partnership agreement with GLOBE officials in Washington, D.C.  The universities will conduct outreach activities to bring K-12 teachers into the program.

GLOBE is a hands-on, inquiry based science and education program working with partners to unite K-12 students, teachers, and scientists in studying the dynamics of the earth’s environment.

“Being part of GLOBE will allow Norfolk State University to continue its mission of enhancing the teaching of science for all learners,” Chaudhury said.

Under the guidance of teachers trained by GLOBE and its partners, tens of thousands of GLOBE students worldwide take environmental measurements at or near their schools, report their data through the Internet to a permanent data archive, create maps and graphs to analyze GLOBE data sets, and collaborate with scientists and other GLOBE students around the world.

GLOBE students have reported more than 5 million science measurements in the areas of atmosphere/climate, hydrology, and soils and land cover/biology.  These global sets are made freely available, via the Internet, to the world science community, student-scientist partnerships and to worldwide school-to-school collaborations.

GLOBE is operated by a consortium of federal agencies, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration, the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency.
