Norfolk State University to Host Emerald Anniversary
Green and Gold Ball Scholarship Fundraiser Nov. 3

Norfolk, Va.—As the highlight of the 65th Anniversary celebration, Norfolk State University will hold the Emerald Anniversary Green and Gold Ball Friday, Nov. 3, at the Chesapeake Conference Center. 

Designed to benefit Norfolk State University student scholarships, the ball will kick-off at 7 p.m. with a silent auction and reception.  Dinner will be served promptly at 8 p.m. and dancing will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.  The cost for the black-tie affair is $100 per person or $165 per couple.

In addition to dinner and dancing, the program will include six special award presentations honoring distinguished individuals and organizations in the community.  The award categories and recipients are as follows:

George Loutts-Loutts, assistant professor of physics and electronics engineering at Norfolk State University will receive the Academic Award for his research and development of new laser hosts and nonlinear optical crystals.  He is responsible for setting up the university’s crystal growth laboratory.

Arlethia Jones Woodard-Woodard will receive the Alumni Award.  She was the first Norfolk State graduate to receive a teaching contract.

Cisco Systems, Inc.-Cisco Systems will receive the Corporate Partner Award.  This year Cisco announced the establishment of a Cisco Networking Academy in Norfolk State University’s School of Science and Technology.  The program teaches students how to design, build and maintain computer networks.

Edward L. Hamm, Jr.-Hamm, president and chief executive officer of E.L. Hamm and Associates, will receive the Generosity Award in recognition of his philanthropic contributions to the university.
NASA Langley Research Center-NASA Langley will receive the Government/Public Service Award.  Over the years, NASA has been a strong contributor to the success of NSU faculty research and student success.  In this year alone, NASA has awarded nearly $5 million dollars to support the university’s goal of becoming a leading research institution.

L.D. Britt –Britt, a renowned surgeon, teacher and community leader, will receive the Service Award.  He is the first African-American to be named a department chairman at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He is also a former member and rector of Norfolk State’s Board of Visitors.
