President Marie V. McDemmond To Be Keynote 
Speaker for Xavier University’s Alumni Banquet

Norfolk, Va.—Norfolk State University President Marie V. McDemmond will be the featured speaker for Xavier University’s Alumni Homecoming Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the New Orleans Hilton Hotel in Louisiana. Dr. McDemmond, an alumnus of Xavier University, will be participating in the Xavier’s 75th anniversary celebration.

McDemmond assumed the role of president of Norfolk State University in July of 1997. Prior to assuming duties at Norfolk State, McDemmond served as vice president for finance at Florida Atlantic University and its seven campuses, where she also served as FAU’s Chief Operating Officer.  McDemmond has also served as vice president for budget and finance at Atlanta University, associate vice chancellor for administration and finance and budget director at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She has served as assistant vice president for finance at Emory University and director of finance for the 15 community colleges in Massachusetts.

McDemmond received her bachelor of arts degree from Xavier University, a master’s degree from the University of New Orleans and her doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta National Sorority and has served on the board of directors for the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. She is a member of the board of directors for the USA Group Foundation, the United Way of Greater Hampton Roads, and the Urban League of Hampton Roads.

She has also received numerous awards and honors including the Pioneer Award by the Outstanding Professional Women of Hampton Roads and the Administrator of the Year designation by the Virginia Association of Educational Office Professionals.
