PRESIDENT RECEIVES "DOUBLE HONOR" IN MAY Norfolk, Va. - Borrowing an expression from the Bible, Norfolk State University President Marie V. McDemmond is found "worthy of double honor." Dr. McDemmond was named the Virginia Association of Educational Office Professionals (VAEOP) "Administrator of the Year" at the VAEOP Spring Institute held at the Doubletree Hotel in Virginia Beach on May 6, 2000. She has also been tapped to receive the prestigious "Pioneer Award" for 2000 given by the Outstanding Professional Women of Hampton Roads (OPW) at its 19th Annual Awards Presentation at 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 19, 2000 at the Virginia Beach Pavilion Convention Center. Jacqueline Howard, president of the VAEOP, and Betty Edwards, president of the Norfolk State University Association of Educational Office Professionals (NSUAEOP), both employees at the university, were just thrilled that their president won this year. McDemmond was selected from a pool of seven candidates and is the first NSU administrator to win the coveted title. NSUAEOP is an affiliate chapter of the VAEOP. McDemmond was declared the winner based primarily on the interest she has shown in educational office personnel, experience and achievements in the educational field, memberships and achievements in professional associations, her educational background, and strong letters of recommendation. She will also be the VAEOP candidate for the National Association of Educational Office Professionals Administrator of the Year for the ensuing year. The OPW Pioneer Award recognizes achievement and the outstanding leadership of women. McDemmond's national leadership and exceptional reputation as an outstanding professional in higher education administration is without question. Barbara H. Lewis, chairman of the OPW, said of McDemmond, "She is a woman of integrity and commitment who cares deeply about student success and educating tomorrow's leaders today." "She is a woman whose work is love in action. And I speak for myself, as well as the committee members and sponsors, when I congratulate her on receiving this exceptional honor," said Lewis. The 2000 OPW Awards Presentation is expected to draw nearly 800 participants and attendees from across the Greater Hampton Roads area and beyond. It combines tribute and entertainment in a social event that brings together the community's top business leaders and so many others from various walks of life. A total of 14 awards will be given to highly deserving women at the event. There will be the woman of the year, pioneer, community service, future's, and 10 outstanding women of the year award recipients. The sponsors of the 19th Annual OPW Awards Presentation are: Advantis; ALLTEL; Armada-Hoffler; Cederquist, Rodriquez, Ripley & Maddux Architectural Association; Crestar Bank; Farm Fresh Super Markets; Hampton Roads Admirals; Hampton Roads Mariners; KIS Computer Business Center; Lincoln Financial Advisors, Inc.; Long & Foster Realtors; Sears; Sentara Women's Services; Wolcott, Rivers, Wheary, Basnight & Kelly, P.C.
