Norfolk, Va. --- The Norfolk
State University Gospel Choir will sponsor a gospel concert, "The Millennium
Gospel Blast" honoring university President Dr. Marie V. McDemmond on
Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at 7:00 p.m., in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing
Arts Center on campus. Celebrating with the NSU Gospel Choir will be

artists, Antoinette "Lady" Jones and Carolyn Smith; Jerusalem Baptist
Church Angelic Choir; Old Dominion University Ebony Impact; Bethlehem
Baptist Church Choir; the NSU Staffers; and others. The concert is free
and open to the public. McDemmond, in her third year of outstanding
leadership, has made numerous positive changes further positioning the
university for greater success in the New Millennium. She often refers
to Norfolk State as the "university of opportunity" where academic excellence
and student success are essential for preparing tomorrow's leaders today.
During her brief tenure, the university's accreditation has been reaffirmed,
four academic centers of excellence have been established, several partnerships
with other educational institutions and agencies have been created,
fiscally sound management and university advancement teams have been
put in place, higher quality students are matriculating, and many other
good things are beginning to happen for Norfolk State University, not
the least of which is, a more equitable funding from the state of Virginia.
