U.S. Department of Education Grant Funds Teacher Recruitment Project at NSU

Norfolk, Va. --- The U.S. Department of Education through a recent Title II Teacher Quality Enhancement Program grant is funding an exciting and innovative collaborative project between Norfolk State University, Norfolk Public Schools, and Portsmouth Public Schools---The Teacher Recruitment Project. The project seeks to increase the number of teachers in the urban classroom, particularly minorities, in Norfolk and Portsmouth by recruiting and training paraprofessionals, substitute teachers, retired military personnel, non-certified teachers, and mid-career professionals who are interested in becoming teachers in high need areas. Undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate offerings are available for selected persons to complete programs in early childhood education (K-4), special education (K-12), and secondary education (7-12). Admission to the program requires two or more years of college work toward an educational program, a 2.5 grade point average or higher, and an interest in getting certified in one of the high need areas. Interested individuals who meet the established criteria are encouraged to apply. Those who are accepted will receive 80 percent of their tuition costs plus additional assistance. The admission deadline for the May academic term is April 15, 2000, and for the January academic term is November 15, 2000. To obtain an application and additional information, contact Norfolk State University's Teacher Recruitment Project Director Dr. Denise Littleton at (757) 823-9583 or Mrs. Harriet Brown at (757) 823-8705. You may also get additional information by contacting Dr. Thomas McAnulty with Norfolk Public Schools at (757) 441-2717 or Dr. Helen Taylor with Portsmouth Public Schools at (757) 393-5092.
